Just have published an interview with Ell, one of core GIMP/GEGL developers. He came to the project 4+ years ago to share a quick patch for GIMP adding one specific little feature and, for some reason, stuck around to grow into one of the most active developers of the program.

There are multiple topics in the interview, but the overarching one, I think, is how one could start hacking on an existing project with a huge code base and deliver great results.
