I have some INCREDIBLY exciting news. I’m going to be working full time on free software!

Specifically, I have been awarded an EU grant to work on spectrum-os.org, a security-through-compartmentalization-based operating system in the style of Qubes, powered and managed by Nix.

@qyliss Oh wow, this looks like a super cool project!

The NSA (!) contributed a bunch of work to X.Org for isolation between clients (I merged the contributions that were for XCB but the bigger part of the work was server-side) and I'm wondering whether you could use any of that.

Also what is Xpra doing that takes a minute to start up? That's horrifying and hopefully fixable.

@qyliss This is the first time I hear about Spectrum OS, qubes but nix what whaaat omg

I can understand why you would be excited.
@qyliss

Good luck! Free/libre needs more such instances of sponsorships.

What do you think of unikernels? One of the unikernel guys tried something in Qubes and blogged about it at roscidus.com/blog .

What about #plan9 ? 9front.org ... and

@qyliss This would fix the number one issue I have with Nixos: The fact that it doesn't actually enforce the separation that it's built on.
