"Israel has a right to defend itself"

Those words have been said countless times by foreign minister of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Tuesday, he was speaking about the EU elections at the University of Copenhagen, but people in the audience kept shouting "stop the genocide". The foreign minister was visibly upset and replied, "Oh now it is my fault, because I am supposed to be able to bring peace to The Middle East?"

Eventually, the minister was escorted out of the building by…

… the Danish police.

I can 100 percent understand the frustration expressed by some students.

In my view, The Danish Government has turned a blind eye to the genocide, and the weapons trade with Israel has continued during the terrible operation in Gaza.

It is now 241 days, since the Gaza war began. That is 241 days were EU countries could have sanctioned the Israeli government, and put the trade on hold, etc.

But to this day, the war continues.

@randahl Sunak's justification for the UK continuing to sell arms to Israel is that UK exports are so small compared to the US it would make no difference. But politics is also about symbolism, so Sunak and the UK, as do other nations, do of course have influence.

@briancs they all reveal their opportunism: As soon as they can make money, all the humanism and grand ideals go out the window.

@randahl
Please correct your wording to reflect that this is not a war.

@diverdutch I believe both the word “genocide" and the word “war” is relevant in this context.

There is an armed conflict — a war — between Hamas and Israel, and during this war, Israel has carried out multiple operations which violate the laws of war to such a wide extent, that it most likely constitutes a genocide — which is why I am also using the word “genocide”.

@randahl
Agree. Maybe using both together, i.e. genocide/war, unless specifically indicating one part of said situation might be called for.

Or as everyone has their own interpretation of what is going on...Gaza Situation?
