Anarchist communities face waves of state repression every few years. In the US we're all overdue for a pile of raids, revealed snitches, RICO / grand jury cases, and random inactive people suddenly serving solitary confinement for decades.
It regularly terrifies me how unprepared this new internet-converted generation is.
Piles of kids have converted to anarchism online without any real grounding in the seriousness of the level of repression you can inevitably expect just for your politics, and the expectations the community has of you (ie don't fucking talk, not one iota, not even when they're starving you in solitary confinement without your meds, and raping you).
Much less any idea how to handle shit when people's lovers/etc are exposed as informants, or just seem like it without proof (don't snitchjacket).
Like yeah, police in the US will raid your home in swat gear with M16s drawn, throw your toddler face first into the concrete, take you to a black site, take you to the forest miles outside of town and stage a mock execution before leaving you stranded naked. They'll beat you bloody in prison, put a plastic bag over your head until you suffocate in your own vomit, they'll rape you, they'll "lose" you in ICE detention or just county jail for months...
All of these things have long been regular occurrences in anarchist circles. And that's not even getting into the "my lover was an undercover cop" trauma or the community civil war that happens when people try to back a friend that snitched while being tortured or the fun little legal loopholes (eg "we can hold you for two working days without charge, so we'll arrest you and then let you go after the timer's up and then promptly arrest you again when you leave the station").
Like *there are expectations of you* in the radical community just by virtue of identifying with the politics. Even if you're just some uninvolved softie bartender who never went to a protest ever, when they give you a summons and expect you to testify in a closed grand jury without fifth amendment protections about who is and isn't an anarchist, throw you in solitary for not complying, and then you talk?
That's not acceptable and the community will punish you.
