AcitivityPub isn't the only protocol used by the Fediverse.

NodeInfo is another protocol that makes up the suite of protocols that the Fediverse is based on.

github.com/jhass/nodeinfo/blob

NodeInfo is used to discover various information about the server node.

Such as:

• the software it is running (ex: Mastodon, PIxelfed, etc)
• the server node's total number of users,
• the number of posts on the server node,
• the number of active users,
• etc.

GitHubnodeinfo/PROTOCOL.md at main · jhass/nodeinfoNodeInfo defines a standardized way to expose metadata about an installation of a distributed social network - jhass/nodeinfo

For example, this is what mastodon.social 's NodeInfo data currently looks like.

And, for example, this is what pixelfed.social 's NodoInfo data currently looks like.

@reiver I can’t figure out how to change settings in the NodeInfo plugin on my WordPress blog site. Is there a way to change what’s made visible? There should be, but I don’t see a settings button or link. Do you know anything about this? Help!

@djzap

I assume you are referring to this NodeInfo plugin for WordPress:

wordpress.org/plugins/nodeinfo/

The author of that is on the Fediverse.

I will tag him: @pfefferle

He can probably answer your question.

WordPress.orgNodeInfo(2)NodeInfo and NodeInfo2 for WordPress!

thanks for forwarding the request @djzap !

@reiver there are no settings (yet) to change the output, but if you tell me what you need and why, I am sure I can support you!

@pfefferle @reiver, I thought that I could perhaps default to basic site & software info: WordPress version; Supported protocols (e.g., ActivityPub, WebFinger); Generic activity metrics (e.g., number of posts, comments). That's versus choosing to share more detailed metrics like number of registered and active users; post and comment frequency;
other statistics. The minimal and moe privacy-focused would be only essential compatibility data like software type and version, supported protocols, while vomiting user counts, activity metrics, or anything identifiable.

If the plugin lacks settings, then I guess that we cannot modify what’s shared about our customized site’s setup? There's no easy or user-friendly option to filter what NodeInfo outputs?

I know the basics of managing a website, and I'm not a programmer. I think that this should be an option in settings for basic users like me, without being too complicated. Especially when we're a small business, starting blogger, and so on.

@reiver @pfefferle thanks… already followed Pfefferle and have known about him for some time.
