left side: services that were affected by russia's attempted telegram block
right side: services that weren't
@revenant No wonder my Говорит Москва has been busted all day.
@revenant not gonna cry for them. that's funny to see tho
@revenant So the interesting thing is, and this is conjecture, but Telegram has never been secure despite being marketed as such. They rolled their own crypto, boasted about it in a really dodgy way, but the crypto isn't even enabled by default. Furthermore Telegram was made by the person who made VKontakte, Russian version of Facebook. The events surrounding the "blocking" of Telegram in Russia are at least somewhat suspicious. Could be making Telegram into a honeypot. But again just conjecture
@Gargron >they rolled their own crypto
i'm so glad i never installed it
@Gargron i was aware of the crypto issues, but i thought their operations had moved out of russia some time ago. but who knows
@gargron @revenant I think the crypto has stood up reasonably well. I'm certainly prepared to trust their intentions. Durov is basically an exile after the government stole VK, so no love lost there.
Honestly I think the Russian government enjoys the reputation of playing 12-dimensional chess, but the whack-a-mole of the last few days is more reflective of reality.
@revenant We can't say their actions are not efficient but the result comparing to the objective is just.... awesome!
