while we're on beatles chat, my fav beatles song is eleanor rigby, which i imagine as the unofficial soundtrack to alan bennets talking heads, bet alan wrote the whole thing with the song on loop
@roadrunner that's my favourite too! for a while it was 'norwegian wood' because i liked the book so much when I was 19, by eleanor edges it out
@tomharris wtf is it based on a book???????????? :O
@roadrunner No, the book
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Wood_(novel)
is named after the song, but the book is arguably more famous than the song now. I hadn't heard of the song when I read the book, because I wasn't really into the Beatles (or music, really) as a teenager, but I did a lot of reading.
@tomharris ah, yeah, i've never actually heard of this book haha. similarly my fav kate bush song is wuthering heights bc i like the book so much
@tomharris @roadrunner my piano teacher, as a "pretentious teenager" in 1966 who thought pop music was for children, said that Eleanor Rigby was the song that made her realise that pop music was Good
@jk @roadrunner there's a pretty good interview of the Radio 3 / classic FM version of desert island disks where the guest chooses a Neutral Milk Hotel song as an example of 'good pop music'. I think there were complaints after a section was played, lol
@jk @tomharris more pop music should have Strings
@roadrunner
I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite (and I have to admit I lean more toward Harrison's solo work)....but "Eleanor Rigby" is up there, as is "Hey Jude"...
