Pinned toot

Hey everyone as of today I'm to @rra it was very nice to hang out here and inspiring enough to help set up yet another instance over at post.lurk.org. Its an instance for around cultural freedom, experimental, new media , net and computational , and things like that.

I'll keep this account dormant for lurking purposes. If I'm following you you probably got a follow request from the new account!

as long as two servers still talk, the fediverse lives

@RyBn not much news today. Busy working for the man. But I did start on the screenless mastodon interface.

β€œToday at Facebook [art] works to create the illusion that the public sphere and the firm are one and the same. It is precisely this illusion on which surveillance capitalism depends.” – Fred Turner

This is spot on and an engrossing read on how surveillance capitalism works to legitimise itself via its aesthetics.

I don't come to Mastodon to read Retweets. I come here to read Toots

Dearest Bram,
You embraced projects for a better world, often you were the first. You gave us your confidence, you defended OSP's project, and your sharp mind helped us advance. And there are so many like us. Today we mourn together.
We miss you.

Poll following recent discussions about DM privacy on Mastodon: Should the Mastodon webapp compose screen warn that DMs are stored on the server (accessible by admins)? strawpoll.me/15387726

A collection of things I made for people new to #Mastodon, based on questions I commonly see in the public timelines during influxes of new folks. :)

has anyone informed the crowd yet that are in fact public and rely on other servers respecting their status as ? This is a scandal of epic proportions waiting to happen. It will be extremely bad press for mastodon/#fediverse and I'd hate to see that. While this is something that will only be fixed in the long term, informing users should start now. Misleading language also really doesn't help.. @Gargron @noelle @HerraBRE @lain

I teach a class at NYU called Reading and Writing Electronic Text that is half introduction to Python, half introduction to computational poetry. the syllabus is here: rwet.decontextualize.com/ and the tutorial/lecture notes are here: github.com/aparrish/rwet I've taught the class many times before, but this year I'm revising all the notes and porting everything to Python 3/Jupyter Notebook. I've also made entirely new tutorials on dictionaries, RNNs and keyword extraction. just wanted to share!

@jcbrand Hi! I've been thinking about chat in #Aardwolf, and we're very much of the opinion that we're better off using/integrating XMPP for chat than trying to implement it ourselves; maybe even for private messages.

Converse.js looks a lot like what we need. I'm really looking for OMEMO support, though, since lack of e2e encryption in Mastodon DMs is a current concern, and OTR is a little harder to use.

Are you looking at OMEMO for Converse.js? Do you have the resources you need for it?

Boosted the post below for the thread and discussion in general, not because I agree with the authors sentiment.
