Hi #Mastodon peeps! My friend @Elli has created a new #instance in the #fediverse specifically for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and for anyone else interested in #speech, speech disorders, and the like (although it's primarily for #SLP professionals). I'd appreciate a #boost if you don't mind to help spread the word about her instance.
What's a good HOWTO for migrating off masto.host onto a Debian VPS?
Have you heard of StreetComplete? It's an Android app that shows you open questions/issues with OpenStreetMap in your area, and asks you to answer them.
It's made for people with no experience with #OpenStreetMap, so it shows only very simple questions that can be answered very clearly. ("What is printed on this street sign?", "What's the number on this house?")
(this isn't a subtoot, just something that's been on my mind for a few days)
Seems to me that using jargon in content warnings kinda runs against their purpose. I only learned what + and - meant a few days ago, I'd assumed + meant etc. or something. And I first thought mh stood for Monster Hunter :0
Warnings should be clear.
Not trying to tell people what to do here, just think it's worth thinking about.
Counterpoint?: initials and symbols cross language barriers more easily.
if you're nostalgic for playing scorched earth on a 386/486, I made a thing to play it through twitch, either against CPUs or against other people in the unlikely event two different people view the stream at the same time:
to make this I hand-rolled an ocr engine in python/opencv just to read the scorch font
anyone else who uses bspwm and polybar know what's at fault here? (probably me?)

Wanna help out with Documentation for Mastodon?
We've just made a little check list for stuff we could use help with right now:
Also, feel free to let me know if there's any other documentation related stuff that I could toot about (write it in a boostable toot with info + links)
the programming and linux #zines by Julia Evans are lovely,
I've seen a bunch of comics by her circulating here on Mastodon, like the one about grep in the picture, so a link to her website is due 😀
and here a link to support her by buying some zines if you are interested https://gumroad.com/b0rk
nzoz's 1983 channel put up a bunch of great live clips from gigs at the Crystal Ballroom. So many recordings of bands from that time really really don't do the bands justice, so this is a real treat (I'd say that about the 2000s when I was super actively going to gigs too).
One of the best (foss) games of all times "The Battle for Wesnoth" got a new major release and is now available on steam. I hope this will have a positive impact on the Wesnoth community and raise some awareness for Free Software/Open Source.
There's a digression about a predecessor named...Scharl?...a poet who specialized in bad poetry he'd recite with great focus. His system was for transmitting images to aliens, in binary, with run length encoding
Anyway Freudenthal's deal is a language, Lingua Cosmica or LINCOS, which is meant to describe human concepts to any conceivable alien intelligence which may not understand what time is, or what it's like to move
for anyone who does illustration / design / etc — how/where did you find your first "client" and how "capable / qualified" did you feel when you started out?
