So folks, the #article13 and #linktax proposals will be going soon to the EU parlaiment, and if they pass they will become a serious problem for the #Fediverse:
* To automatically filter copyrighted materials, even badly, you need a way to reference those materials. Even our largest instances probably can't afford access!
* Our instances will not be able to afford licenses to link to news sites under the new #LinkTax rules.

@cathal Article 11 is just as bad. Basically, quoting articles will not be possible without an explicit license: occrp.org/en/announcements/800

We really need to stop them from becoming the law.

@rysiek @cathal That particular one will be very short-lived once the lobbyists realize that they just shot their own feet.

German publishers already did this and they realized it was a mistake within like a week of the rules going into effect

@paulfree14 I also expect the #article13 not to last very long, after countries see a sizeable chunk of their local economy die and get eaten by Google. But by then, of course, it's too late..

@cathal Arguably the damage in that area is *already* done, since the income source for pretty much any online journalism are ads provided by Google.

@rysiek @cathal One thing that occurs to me is that if this becomes law, Virus and Malware authors could copyright their code so antivirus and anti malware authors could no longer include tokens to find and remove them legally. They say it will never be used this way but "they" have always used laws this exact way.
