Finally there is some serious discussion in the mainstream of the possibility of a coup in the USA. Before it was either clickbait or irony.

I've been worried about this for quite some time, but most people I spoke with played it down.

I like how "American exceptionalism" is explicitly called out as a cause of that here:

This is also a decent read about this:

To be clear, my worry is that Democrats are trying to win the election, while Republicans are playing a different game, they're way past elections even if they are not consciously planning for it.

I notice that a lot of people I mention this to *assume* I am talking about intentional, planned coup. I am not.

I am talking about there being enough chaos that combined with the polarization of US politics, militarization of US police, and neo-nazi militias on the streets it will just "feel natural" for the authoritarians like Pence - not even Trump! - to "assume power" to "reign-in the chaos".

When I look at how the Berlin Wall fell, or the dissolution of the USSR, it was not *planning*, it was chaos + will to seize the opportunity that killed the beast.

For anyone reading this thread who has not seen @drwho's toot, if you also feel concerned about this, *go here*:

I am not a USA-ian, and yet I still found it insightful and practically useful.

@rysiek I've been worried about this for years. I see no path in which he actually leaves power. It seems like many I know realize that but just don't know what to do with it. I mean, if you can't change it and can't leave, what option is there?

It's all truly scary

Uff, same!! Thanks for posting this.

@rysiek Yeah, I can't understand why it's taken this long to enter mainstream. I've been freaking out about this for a long time.

@rysiek @drwho

I hate that we're in a spot where this is useful advice to keep in our back pockets.

@rysiek If they couldn't successfully pull off a Coup in Bolivia I doubt they can do it here.

@dualhammers see, this is exactly what I referred to in my last toot in the thread.

You're assuming a planned and coordinated coup. I am not worried about that. I am worried about there being enough chaos that somebody among the Republicans sees the opportunity and seizes it with the help of neo-nazi "gun rights activist" militias.

And there are plenty of paths to that kind of chaos as things stand.

@rysiek I will not be surprised by sporadic lone-wolf violence, but my guess is that most Republicans don't actually want to get shot out front of a Walmart. They want their cheeseburgers and big cars.

That is a huge difference between us, now, and 1920 (mentioned in the link gibson posted) you can still get your $.99 mcchicken.

But we shall see. And there is a difference between not driving myself insane with worry and not preparing.

@rysiek Another phenomenon to consider, which I think everyone can fall victim to - causing the thing you fear by believing the other side is going to do it first.

uspol, elections, trump

@dualhammers there's a difference between preparing for a thing, and preparing to do that thing.

uspol, elections, trump

@rysiek We might disagree on this, but that's fine

@rysiek a key thing about the mainstream media here is that they value a sense of normalcy above all else. it's why they've quoted trump saying the most outrageous garbage without challenging his framing, even if some outlets might condemn the specifics. the US hasn't been invaded in over 200 years and most peoples' imaginations can't contemplate the possibility of a soft coup and what it would look like. i agree that it's a very real danger here.
