Last month the Netherlands passed into law: all ISPs must let customers choose their own Internet hardware and still provide tech support at no extra cost. That little box is your home-internet gatekeeper, and now in NL it can work for you fsfe.org/news/2021/news-202108

@samtuke Hasn’t that been the case since the open Internet regulation in 2015?

@neil You tell me 😀 (I'm a fan, sadly not an expert). If so, perhaps the NL change is the application of an EU directive at the national level? From @fsfe 's reporting it seems like the battle must be fought separately in each jurisdiction?

@samtuke @fsfe I’m surprised, but I haven’t dug into the detail of the Dutch law. But then I’m fortunate to use an ISP which has always let me use my own kit…

@neil Do they have good customer service for non-technies? I'm in the market for a new UK ISP for my Mum (we were with the 'UK Free Software Network' for years, but they were recursively acquired by larger fish long ago).

@samtuke Why not get her to give their sales team a ring, and see how she gets on? If she feels they’ve been able to talk to her in a way she feels comfortable, that’s probably a good indication of support?

@neil @samtuke I say that because I tend to just email them, or use irc. I have only have superb support experiences, including for my parents’ line recently, where they went so far above and beyond that even I, a fan (and long time customer, and lawyer), was impressed.

@neil That's the best recommendation I'm likely to get, Thanks! But we seem to have skipped the part where you tell me their name 🧐😄

@samtuke Whoops! aa.net.uk. They are not a budget option, and you get what you pay for.

@samtuke That's cool. The proviso to provide support though? Ouch.

@samtuke

>and still provide tech support at no extra cost

"Sir, I'm going to have to insist you send another technician if you're not able to make your internet service work. You are legally required to support my potato."

@samtuke I wonder how easy it is in NL to buy a DOCSIS modem or a fiber ONT that you can use with any ISP and any router.
