I have 2 laptops running Debian, a blank install. I need to connect to a switch via USB over serial cable. I don't see anything in the base OS that I can use, cu is not a valid command. I guess I need Internet access to use this distro.
@incin Hmm, wasn't Linux originally designed to be a terminal emulator? What happened?
@feld @incin no, but proper open source graphics would be a start
@aatu.icante.ventures @feld @incin that reminds me that slip kernel driver got removed from #freebsd
@feld @wictory @incin obviously not, but I remember using it relatively recently to give some box IP connectivity over the serial cable. But fortunately even the ancient Sun boxes can do PPP.

The last time I set up slip commercially for Internet access was around 1997 with MTU of 1008 bytes. Had to email some large site admins to stop filtering ICMP to make Path MTU discovery work on their Suns. #freebsd became a SLIP router replacing KA9Q :)
@saper @feld @wictory @incin My first dialup internet was you dialed into a getty login and then ran slirp in the shell. :-)
@feld @notclacke @wictory @incin Lucky you. I had to take a bus to the university to access 3270 terminal to VM/CMS.
Marcin Cieślak @saper

@calvin @saper @feld @notclacke @wictory @incin but VM is really cool.

I had to reboot my virtual machine to temporarily get more RAM to be able to run Usenet News client!

We've had IRC (RXIRC in ) and , too!

@saper @incin @wictory @feld @saper @calvin I love the mention of Rexx, not because it is a good language, it's horriblenin a few ways, but because it is old and has nostalgia, and because ARexx had great application integration.
