For Minecraft Java Edition you'll need to have a Microsoft account now.

@sasha_sorokin microsoft finally killed a once great game for good 😥
@sasha_sorokin
Microsoft can kiss my ass before I do that
@Slacktoid wait, you didn't hear it clear, let me quote:
> Now just to be clear, migrating from Mojang to Microsoft accounts is MANDATORY. If you don’t make the move, in several months you won’t be able to log in anymore – which means you won’t be able to play either.
:)
@sasha_sorokin
Guess I won't be playing official Minecraft anymore.. FOSS clones here I come!
@sasha_sorokin @Slacktoid Damn, can't believe I have to pirate Minecraft again.
@Le3Kat imagine buying Minecraft after a long time playing through a cracked launcher just to find out you have to migrate to Microsoft, which you don't want to do due to your beliefs. Ohhh
@Le3Kat
I legitimately paid for Pocket Edition, but at some point (I think when it became Bedrock) they added DRM and it now it "can't verify" or whatever, so I have to pirate something I paid for. Later, when I switched to Java, I chose to pirate it to get back at them for the Windows keys that came with my computers that I was forced to pay for despite not using.
@sasha_sorokin @Slacktoid
@sasha_sorokin utterly bollocks
@sasha_sorokin reminds me of when youtube made everyone switch to google accounts.
that said, your "mojang" account is already an account hosted/run by microsoft anyways, and it does make sense that they'd want to piggyback off the main microsoft account team's security work rather than manage a second independent authentication system.
@webb @sasha_sorokin at the scale of the numbers of people with minecraft accounts nothing is easy. And minecraft accounts are big hacking targets. It makes complete sense that they'd switch to an existing hardened authentication system with dedicated support people so they don't need to maintain a large additional team to run a separate auth used only by a single game.
> Now just to be clear, migrating from Mojang to Microsoft accounts is MANDATORY. If you don’t make the move, in several months you won’t be able to log in anymore – which means you won’t be able to play either.
They even formatted ‘mandatory’ word, makes the intent clear.
@webb there actually were a few known ban waves when Microsoft accounts were banned with no reasons whatsoever.
@robby I mean, if you migrate manually, no you'll not lose it, but if by some reason you don't want to migrate your account over to Microsoft, this is a kiss goodbye to your copy of Minecraft.
Now just to be clear, migrating from Mojang to Microsoft accounts is mandatory. If you don’t make the move, in several months you won’t be able to log in anymore – which means you won’t be able to play either.
I missed this the first time I read it. Thats disturbing. I feel like this shouldn’t be legal.
@robby pff, Google pulled that trick with YouTube and G+, what's stopping Microsoft from doing the same? :)
@sasha_sorokin Fuck Minecraft, fuck Microsoft.
@sasha_sorokin Hmmm.
If it wasn't piracy I'd try and make an auth replacement.
@gudenau there's https://ely.by that is supported by TL (not launcher under stolen TLauncher name).
@sasha_sorokin The biggest problems with these sorts of things is:
- Piracy
- Requires modified servers
- Requires modified clients/launchers
@gudenau @sasha_sorokin allows for exploits to end users.
this will open a whole new scene for custom launchers that will infect the PCs of thousands of children
@John @sasha_sorokin The launcher I'm working on will limit that on Linux if you have some kernel features (that really should be enabled, even Android uses some) enabled.
@gudenau @sasha_sorokin just mean the gloves will come off, kids will google "minecraft hax" and get owned soon... your launcher isn't the issue. their crm wedge drives people to hack the client which will lead to issues.
@John @sasha_sorokin Fair enough, but there is malware that is distrusted in the mods themselves. So that's fun.
@sasha_sorokin whaaaaaaaaat
@sasha_sorokin 2020 keeps on giving
@sasha_sorokin Microsoft is sus
@sasha_sorokin It's sad because all the FOSS alternatives to Minecraft just aren't at the same level of the original imho. Mojang/MS knows this. They basically encourage you to learn programming by creating clones of minecraft, and they fully know no one will ever be able to compete with the harmony of textures, music, mechanics that is Minecraft.
@sasha_sorokin welp looks like it's Minetest for me then
They said on Reddit that they will provide help to third party launchers with this migration.
But now I wonder, will they do it through applying process? Means that if they don't like your launcher for some reason (like it can run offline), your application may be denied and you will not be able to authorize players? :)
