Newbie tip: Mastodon doesn't show the number of favs/boosts until you click on a toot, and also you won't necessarily see the full number of favs/boosts even then, especially if you're on a newer instance whose members aren't following that many remote accounts yet (only boosts/favs/replies from followed users are shown).
My advice: just focus on the content and the connections rather than the engagement metrics. Because that's what matters anyway. 😊

I think it's interesting how in the early days of the net we had message forums, then came instant messaging (Yahoo and AIM), and now we have instant live video via Facebook and FaceTime, etc...
It's going to be interesting to see how we communicate online twenty years from now!
Ultimately Mastodon's killer feature is that it's a public good that someone built because they thought it needed to exist and not a startup someone built because they wanted to get rich quick selling other people's data.
I feel like Mastodon is the natural evolution of Twitter (and I'm sure @Gargron does too) and can't wait for the concepts to progress further.
Plus, since it's open source, I can contribute myself! It's amazing.
I love that Mastodon uses the word toot, it's the shit like that that will keep users. It sounds silly, but I think it helped Twitter in its early years. Everyone knows what a retweet is now

The mastodon.social instance is under extremely heavy load, I don't do tracking so I don't know where exactly people are coming from but I know there's been a few high profile mentions of Mastodon in media/on Twitter. If this keeps up I will scale up further (I know all the arguments about this instance growing too big in the federation, but if the internet is already at your doorstep, should you go down or scale up? Scale up imo)
has mastadon.social been generating a lot of 500 errors for anyone else?
My coworker and I have some of the same t-shirts from attending workshops and shit, it's amazing how often we end up wearing the same shirt...
Mastodon is neat. I might build a small site to allow me to post to Twitter and here at the same time using the respective APIs.
