Today in 1964 BASIC made its debut, in an effort to take programming out of the world of machine language.

I learned BASIC the first time sometime around 1967, in 3rd or 4th grade and without a computer, from a book I got from the post library. I wrote my programs out longhand, never more than a page long, never executed, now lost.

Got hands-on experience next in 1976, on a Wang 2200T, no mass storage at first. Programs written longhand and then entered as quickly as we could in our 15 minute timeslots, debugged, and paper copies updated.
