@linux The support for Windows 7 ended for me when I upgraded to a modern CPU and Microsoft forced me to update to Windows 10 to continue having updates, as my "cpu was unsupported".

That day I sent Windows to the trash and switched to GNU Linux.

GitLab "Ultimate" and "Gold" for self hosting now free for education and open source.

This is GitLab taking this massive opportunity after Microshaft swallowed GitHub and making the best of it.

The more people are moving over now, the better their own future will be in the long run.

GitLab also make migration easier, starting the campaign with a straight-forward video etc.

GitLab is open source itself, too.

Those involved or know people who are involved in education: Tell them to bring free software into their schools.

At my school students Google Docs, Logger Pro, Google Chrome etc. and this creates a dependency, almost like an addiction, towards using non-free software. Instead, use Debian, LibreOffice, Firefox etc.

We should be teaching students to value their freedom. The project's philosophy isn't crazy; it's the way forward. Well, maybe real change has always needed a little crazy.

Yesterday on a whim I had a strong desire to upgrade to unstable, so I edited my APT sources, then ran sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Fortunately, I had time to recover from my impulsiveness and called it off. Still on stable.

It's really about stability, I've lost so many hours trying to fix things across multiple computers over the years, and plus, what's new and shiny that I really need? I use , everything else is extra.

After , it would be interesting to see how many people actually forked this instance. Actions still speak louder than words, it seems.

The beauty of Mastodon is not only that it is free and open but that it’s federated. You can fork it without losing access to the network or your social graph. There’s no reason a hundred forks couldn’t exist.

Also, when did forking become an insult? As far as I’m concerned, it’s the biggest compliment you can pay a project. And if you fork and stay federated, you’re actually helping to strengthen the fediverse!

What you can’t do is force people to build what you want out of entitlement.

You know what's kinda funny? I found out about because it was on the trending bar. I really think it should be an optional feature, so people can have their own way.

when i first saw the stuff, i liked it and i still like it... this is a bit weird to me, but if people start making their own versions of , it might be a good thing - others can implement fixes, features from other forks. if it's gonna be all connected in the fediverse, where people from other platforms and instances can communicate, does it really matter?
