ip man's cinematography was absolutely fantastic, beautiful settings that are almost theatre-like, the acting honestly a bit sub par but the martial art scenes were fantastic. very interesting subtle cues, such as cantonese-mandarin dialogues (language reflecting power dynamics)

the representation of the japanese, of course, SUPER caricatural - they embody the colonial evil and nothing more, even though the main japanese character had the limited merit of having the virtues of a martial arts practitioner (discipline, politeness, desire for fairness)

of course it also suffers from all the problems of traditional martial arts movies, though some of it was mitigated (e.g. role of women - the wife embodying the traditional role, while ip man himself stresses that kung fu had nothing to do w gender or age - interesting quote that reminded me of Qur'an 49:13)

finally got around to watching ip man. slight variations but a very classic cantonese martial arts movie, beautifully executed. the most interesting "variation" was the twist on chinese identity and the role of the "north," something that in 2008 was starting to be seen as another assault on hk and guangdong
