I've been playing Tree of Savior with my friends and I adore its art, music, and world. I feel like I'm a kid again, lost in a huge RPG world. #gameing

Of course that's broadly a problem with signing up for *anything* on the internet that asks you to input a password, and the only reasonable self-defense is to not re-use passwords, but telling users not to re-use passwords isn't practical advice, because they're going to do it anyway.

The particular problem is that Mastodon makes it look like any old instance can be trusted (at least as much as one might trust any other instance), which is not necessarily the case.

So setting aside Lance Ulanoff's relatively frivolous article, William Shatner is making a salient point with regards to the fediverse. It's easy to get a server federated and start getting users. There's no significant barrier of trust for federation right now, and it's also not clear which Mastodon instance you should join when you're a new user. It would be easy for a malicious actor to set up a Mastodon instance and start collecting passwords.
