Mastodon's web interface should probably treat all local and federated timeline media as potentially NSFW and hide the thumbnails by default. Put a toggle button at the top so it's easy to flip the switch when it's safe, though.
Cuz I totally just saw some things that cannot be unseen when I accidentally clicked on the local timeline button while sitting here in a public coffee shop with people standing behind me. Just sayin'. @Gargron
wilw, Hardwick, metoo, people being assholes
I don’t know why people are still thinking that they’re entitled to demand Wil make a statement about the accusation against Chris Hardwick. It was one accusation, multiple people said it was not true, AMC ended up giving him back his show, Nerdist put him back on theirs about page. If they can move on, why can’t you? What makes you think you have more facts than them?
Stop being an asshole.
I'm not happy with how the Wil Wheaton situation was resolved. An admin was overwhelmed with frivolous reports about him and felt forced to exile him. I've said before that I think it sets a dangerous precedent on how a large group of people can mobilize to drive anyone off the fediverse. Mob rule is universally dangerous: Mods and admins must examine evidence and decide based on wrongdoing and danger, and not on how many times someone was reported.
I know that I'm well-off, well-known, and as a CIS white hetro dude in America, I live life on the lowest difficulty setting. I know that I have very little to complain about.
But I still have feelings, and I really do care about the world and the people in it. What I see is a lot of anger and cruelty directed at the IDEA of me, from people who I just hope don't realize that it really does hurt me, in my heart, to be accused of being someone I am not, and to be the target of a hateful mob. 5/x
Seems pretty shitty that @TheAdmin @email@example.com is banning @wilw just because WIL is being harassed by other people. This is not how things are supposed to work. People shouldn't be bullied off of a platform. The Mastodon platform was supposed to be better than this, and mastodon.cloud is showing that is is not an instance that anyone should put any trust or faith into.
