TFW you want to run benchmarks, but your dedicated server for benchmarking is busy generating test data for more benchmarks.

I think I need to unfollow @hntooter; it's eating my entire home timeline ๐Ÿ˜‚ either that, or find more people using Mastodon!

Tonight's reading material: Bitcoin's 0.12 mempool PRs. There's a lot of new logic there which may or may not be suitable for Zcash, but definitely needs to safely interact with our z-addr mempool logic.

Occurred to me just now over dinner that the entire trajectory of human history could be summed up by these five words:

"What could possibly go wrong?"

Today's worktime showdown: Cap'n Proto vs FlatBuffers. There's little difference between them for my use case, so I get to bike-shed about it ๐Ÿ˜ Gonna try out the former and see how it goes....

I finished tidying up the Trac tickets for I2P-Bote that I migrated to GitHub. If you're looking for something to hack on (crypto protocol design / Java / JSP / Android / UX), take a look!

I've finally updated the I2P-Bote Git mirror with over a year of dev work from Monotone, including Gradle build scripts: github.com/i2p/i2p.i2p-bote

I'm going to move I2P-Bote dev entirely to GitHub to reduce contributor friction (including my own). Hopefully this means more people contributing in the future! There's plenty to do for people who like working on UX, DHTs or high-latency comms. I'd particularly love to see mixnet functionality added ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I've spent 17 hours awake, fiddling with debugger flags and writing code, in order to solve a puzzle.

โœจ It's live! My start to finish guide for getting your own instance up and running with Docker on Ubuntu 16.04: github.com/ummjackson/mastodon

I've tested this on both Vultr and DigitalOcean and the instructions should be pretty much copy/paste for everyone. Hope this helps some people! ๐Ÿ˜€

Good luck and feedback appreciated!! (cc @Gargron / @TonyNof / @david / @vielmetti / @lmorchard )

OH: "I broke the protocol in front of him. I'm sorry, I did it almost by accident."

I'm getting back into the swing of working on @i2p proposals (for changing the network specifications), starting with editing and expanding prop 125 which is aimed at improving network performance. Comments welcome!

geti2p.net/spec/proposals/125-

Hopefully I'll manage to bash through several more proposals from my backlog this weekend ๐Ÿ˜Š

And from that, I think I now have a reasonable-sounding proposal for decentralised shared randomness in  Gonna leave it stewing in my brain during work tomorrow, and then try writing it up for Fun Friday to see if it actually makes sense :fingers_crossed:

Tonight's bedtime reading material: bootstrapping of dynamic sets in decentralised protocols.

OK y'all! tooter.today is live and ready to help your friends find places to toot from! It provides scored instances in an easy-to-use fashion for new users and helps onboard them to tinier instances. Please help me load-test it by boosting it across the fediverse! :)

Next to come is a nice home page with explanations of the fediverse!

Ooh, nice attention-to-UX thing I just noticed: when your toot audience is "private" or "direct", the "TOOT!" button gains a lock icon. It's little things like that which encourage me about Mastodon; I can live with a usable interface that suffers from occasional bouts of time travel  :clock230:

About risk profile:

- Mastodon is like email because you can't delete federated toots
- Mastodon is like twitter in that Google's search bots index it, unless your admins robot.txt it away
- Mastodon is like being a teenager because the people that own your instance can see all your private stuff

Have a talk with your admin about their policies.

By default, assume everyone will be able to read your toots forever.

Ooh, I think I've finally caught up with reality!

INTRO TO FEDERATION:

1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.

2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.

3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.

4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!
