All the RAM and virtual memory in the world didn’t stop Final Cut Pro for iPad from cancelling an export the moment I switched to another app in Stage Manager for a split second🥴

Final Cut Pro for iPad is a real struggle you guys. I’ve been using FCP for 23 years, but this is every bit an ‘iPad app’ in all the worst ways 👀 I really hope a v2.0 is on the horizon…

@stroughtonsmith Yikes. Sounds like they lifted the memory manager from OS 6 Finder.

@stroughtonsmith But Steve, what even *is* a computer?

@stroughtonsmith on the same stage or a different stage? Never had such issues working in the same stage.

@finnvoorhees @stroughtonsmith I’m not 100% sure that’s why, depends on the export pipeline. The AV export APIs clearly state that exports stop on any app backgrounding. Normal exports likely don’t use the GPU as H.264 export is hardware accelerated separately I think? Custom compositing using Metal would use GPU, but it will stop anyway. I suspect hardware acceleration exclusivity? Always seen this in my app @Captionista so I add a warning to the export window.

@marcpalmer hmm yeah, I guess both GPU and hardware encoder are restricted in the background. Still surprised they don't just bypass that for their apps, it’s such a bad experience.

@finnvoorhees it is a terrible experience. I suppose the challenge is also with any custom compositing of an AV export session, they have to keep the app alive too. Hard to swing that even internally I imagine - keeping the beast that is FCP running in the bg. They need something like an AVExportExtension where we can “hand off” the export pipeline to a lighter process and add UI to iOS to see export status and cancellation etc. Can see why it’s not there… yet(?)

@stroughtonsmith do you honestly believe, that the guys at Apple still remember it exists?

@stroughtonsmith Just another piece of software on the one-year-and-wait update schedule. Hopefully it wasn't just a promotion vehicle for someone and it'll actually get fixed.

@its_john_davis @stroughtonsmith related to this, a few days ago received two promotional emails from Apple, one about Final Cut Pro for iPad, and another one for Logic Pro… weird that I got them just after registering an iPad Pro M2…

@stroughtonsmith I’ve had issues with the Logic iPad app, too, and the sub is coming up for renewal pretty soon. Really questioning if it’s worth it.

@stroughtonsmith I’d just go back to the desktop version.

@stroughtonsmith Those dialogs with progress bars in iOS apps are the worst – feel like fragile 90s programs all over again.

@stroughtonsmith That's terrible. iPad OS should be much more like Mac OS and less like iOS. I still can't believe that iPads don't support multiple user accounts.

@stroughtonsmith Sad that iPad software needs so much work 🙁

@stroughtonsmith “What’s a computer?”

Like seriously none of this would have been acceptable in the 90s on computers less powerful than an Apple Watch, and yet today Apple releases this as a pro app?

Do we think there’s a metric being measured when this fails? I’m scared the answer is “no”.

@stroughtonsmith I think this is the part where #Apple wants you to roundtrip that project to brand spanking new 16 inch M3 Max #MacBook Pro to finish up. 😉

@stroughtonsmith Export failed: we told you not to switch away

@stroughtonsmith Hey! It's just like my 16GB (7GB free!) Asus tablet. Let the good times roll!

@stroughtonsmith Does FCP for iPad have a setting like this?

@siracusa @stroughtonsmith What fer special API?! I'm assuming LumaFusion or DaVinci Resolve doesn't get access to this?

@siracusa I think there’s a hard limit about using the GPU in the background, which is what a video export needs. I don’t believe there’s a setting

@stroughtonsmith @siracusa just checked and FCP for iPad doesn’t have a setting like that.

@stroughtonsmith and people legitimately ask why we care that iPad OS is neutered compared to macOS.
