How I think I look when using the internet vs how I actually look when using the internet

Halo - S01E09 - Transcendence

Given that the show will need its third consecutive showrunner next season (if any), anticlimax was inevitable, but it's still sad to see that Halo never really made a case for being what it is, only what it could be.

Well that was an okay mid-season finale for Halo, don't know how they're going to pay off some of the dangling arcs but they can still pull it off in the second half of the seas...

Oh, that was the *season* finale, huh.

lol bye

What the heck. Trying to post a CW'd Toot consisting solely of a captioned image, and web interface consistently converts the CW into Toot text. Definitely not expected behavior, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong based on the UI.

@lrhodes Inspiring my own counter-poll:

What's the longest you've gone without a smartphone after having had one.

Responses include prior option as lower bound, so "- < 1 year" -> "1 month to 1 year"

Any sufficiently advanced technology is insufficiently documented

Dear open source users,

If the author of your favorite open source app has announced they stopped developing and supporting the app (because they're frustrated and possibly burned out), please don't suggest they do more free work so that you can continue using the app.
Instead, consider thanking them for their past work and let them know that you enjoyed their app.

Talking about playing Sierra games as a kid with Delade today and explaining that basically Pepper’s Adventures in Time modeled how I explain any technology related thing to my parents because I can imagine trying to explain it to Benjamin Franklin.

Was curious and checked the timeline on Wiki to see when I first started lurking. I was definitely there when Kaycee Nicole was debunked, so prior to May 2001. (I didn't actually create an account until 2010.)

I may need to cut back on MeFi, though; am currently watching a hot-button thread become a predictable trainwreck and I forgot how much more unpleasant that is in real-time, instead of doing a weekly archive binge.

I've mostly substituted doomscrolling on Twitter with watching the firehose on Mastodon, and actively lurking again on MetaFilter (which I've been visiting intermittently for 20+ years).

What's the longest you've used a single smart phone? (Boost for a broader data pool.)

I get frustrated when people start arguing constitutional originalism, because it tells me that the person has never read books like this one, which argues convincingly that within the founders' own lifetimes their doctrines had mostly been discarded, either because they no longer lined up with public sentiment (which was far more democratic than the aristo founders ever were) or because they simply did not work goodreads.com/book/show/6956.T

I'll happily read space opera and Gene Wolfe until the sun winks out, but applications of Clarke's Law are fundamentally uninteresting to me in a visual medium. (I'm the guy who turns off 2001 when the slit-scan sequence starts.)

Continuing my clearly masochistic attempt to watch The Expanse despite hating everything to do with the "protomolecule" that, halfway through S2, is clearly central to the show. The canvas is already *way* too huge for a show whose strengths are the details.

I've seen this post about "Google blocking all third party email accounts starting in June" boosted quite a bit lately ( mastodon.honeypot.im/@digdeepe )

Please stop boosting it: the statement is untrue.

Google will continue supporting app passwords ( support.google.com/accounts/an ). Using them requires two-step verification ( support.google.com/accounts/an ) which you can set up with any TOTP application, no phone required.

Bailed on HBO's Barry 10 minutes into the pilot. Was already not vibing with the tone and the knockoff of Lawrence Block's Keller (dark comedy about a depressed hitman who tries out new identities while procrastinating on his assignments). The Magnolia scene and The Fonz as an emotionally abusive acting coach were the last straws.
