Dropping in to post a link to an interesting article on autofiction/memoir by Will Self in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/dec/13/will-self-memoir
For some reason the Guardian Books section has totally buried the piece. It's nowhere to be found on the main page, and if it hadn't been featured in their weekly newsletter I'd never have seen it. Self isn't everyone's cup of tea but this is well worth reading.
@Sunita Flashing on "The Good Place" season 3:
* Tahani: “I once played a drinking game with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively at their macrobiotic farm with a particularly robust batch of homemade kombucha.”
Jason: “Do I have to drink for every word I don’t know?”
Magdalena Edwards in the LARB on working with Benjamin Moser. This is a brutal and entirely believable takedown. He's been credit-claiming for years, even an outsider like me could see something was fishy about his ownership of Lispector's work and persona.
Another Booker longlist review:
Weeknote 18 - Uncertainty and Discomfort: idle thoughts on the consequences of success.
Where I talk about why I'm more stressed about my work project succeeding than it potentially failing.
I've been working my way through the Booker longlist. I keep forgetting to link to my review of Lanny, which I did not love as much as many readers But I will not be surprised if it gets shortlisted.
In the most recent links post at my blog, I talk about & link to posts on MacMillan's kneecapping of ebook lending to US libraries. And also the wild puppies of Madagascar (which we all need to see immediately and repeatedly).
I posted a recipe at my blog for the first time in ages:
It's a long ingredients list but it's easy to put together. And you can bake it if you don't have a grill.
OK, I'm going in. 1000 pages, here I come. 😅
And thanks to Galley Beggar for sending me the ebook as an addition to the print copy, since I value my wrists.
Liverpool FC sold its Melwood training facility (it's building a new one). It's to a not-for-profit to develop social housing, which is definitely a good thing. But Melwood has been part of #LFC for such a long time. Change. I hate change.
Wow. I didn't realize that Mastodon will now let you edit and repost a toot. That's awesome. I can clean up my typos and add forgotten hashtags!
It works best if you realize you want to edit it right after you post, because you lose your boosts and favourites when you redo the toot. #mastotip
Another Booker longlist review: My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite:
I reviewed John Lanchester's The Wall today at my blog. It's the 3rd of my Booker longlist reads:
Practicing Social Scientist. Corgi wrangler. Reader of fiction. I toot in English but can read in other languages.
