Reminded that the Microsoft ebook store closes next week. The DRM'd books will stop working.

I cannot believe that sentence.

"The books will stop working."

I keep saying it and it sounds worse each time.

@sybren When this happened with Sony, they did a deal to transfer them over to Kobo. It was really seamless and worked great. I didn't lose any books and I remain a Kobo customer to this day. The world can be better! (And ePubs are hella crackable.)

@imani
The thing is, IMO once you buy something it should be yours, regardless of whether the original manufacturer decides to disappear gracefully or abruptly.

@sybren Wow. That's sad. Another eyample why #DRM is a bad idea. And the reason why I only buy #unprotected Music, Movies etc. (e.g. on #bandcamp, or on #CD / #DVD / #Blu-Ray in store).

Unfortunately, I don't know something that works for ebooks, though...

@unfa @sybren imagine being a writer and this happening to your work.
How pissed would you be?
Clearly DRM isn't there to protect authors.

@rgh @sybren I think it's there only to serve publisher's interest. And screw over everyone else.
