Successfully reinstalled my Macbook 13" late 2013 with encrypted Mojave and encrypted @openbsd 6.5 tonight, thanks to the really helpful instructions at gist.github.com/jcs/5573685 Thank you @jcs

Switched to a Dell XPS 15 running Ubuntu for my current contract. Yesterday I was able to complete the setup when the R2D2 sticker arrived from Holland, Michigan πŸ˜€

Yesterday I was able to quickly setup my Ubuntu environment on my new Dell XPS 15 thanks to github.com/JackHack96/dell-xps, a home grown ansible playbook and the always excellent rsync to copy my homedir over from the old machine.

Discord is valued at 1.65 _billion_ dollars.

What kind of person can look at that and go "ah, yes, this free chat service is totally not gonna screw us out of private data for profit"?

β€œJust install Linux on it” is the β€œjust change the engine of your car” of tech.

Not everyone is a mechanic, not everyone wants to be a mechanic, and, if we want a world where freedom is the norm, we must stop expecting everyone to become a mechanic.

Note: this is not because these people are too dumb to be mechanics. It’s because they’re brain surgeons and space-shuttle pilots and they have three kids and they care for a loved one and they don’t have time to also be a mechanic.

In other news I ordered a Dell XPS 15" model to use as business Linux desktop. For all the native docker goodness and so on.

I will sure miss MacOS features on occasions, but Ubuntu is good enough for my professional needs and I will find workarounds for any remaining gaps.

So it is officially back to Linux on the desktop after using mostly MacOS for the last 14 years.

And it is still totally borked. Touchbar sorta works, hard crash of the machine, error report complaining about bridgeOS, no touchbar anymore.

So much for premium quality I guess.

Yesterday I got my Macbook back which apparently has stability issues because of debris in the touch bar connector?

O well, it is now running a 24 hour session of time machine restores. Let see if it is really stable when I actually try to use it.

The machine arrived and my coworker was not impressed. So much he is sending it right back. Sloppy build quality apparently. 😩

Totally trying out the dat thing that @aral keeps plugging :

In other news a coworker of mine ordered a Clevo based laptop that I was considering last August. That should be an excellent opportunity for me to get some hands one with these far cheaper machines.

When I looked at it last summer I quickly realized that I could buy 2 nicely specced Clevo for the money needed for a similar equipped Macbook Pro.

The kids were all gone for the weekend, so that left us with time to spare. My wife was happely doing photo stuff while I spend some time tuning my Ubuntu install.

Most importantly I set up Backup/duplicity to do a daily backup of my homedir to the Synology. This should be an okay enough replacement for MacOS timemachine for now.

The bad: failed to boot Linux on my G5 mac.

The good: The Intel based Mac Pro is now running Ubuntu 18.04

Linux on the desktop: because it's easier to accept community-driven brokenness than profit-driven misbehavior
