A friend dropped by last night with some video footage of the fire raging past his house.  He lives down by the Wollondilly River near the heart of the national forest. Appears to be approx 50m high flames and he was only about 50m away and he shows the whole situation unfold over several weeks when it was just smoke in the distance right up until it impacted (fancy technical word for burned) his property. The only reason he was able to witness this event from closeup and his home is still standing is because the wind was blowing really hard (70-80kmph) at a right angle to where he was standing and kept the heat "reasonable" at his position as the fire pushed past him. I should try and get him on to Zap to share some of this media with the fediverse. It's jaw dropping.
