Some weird point I keep seeing on Birdsite is that CWs steal due attention and deserved views away from content creators...
What happens in actuality: [CW: Horny, Strange Fetishes, Don't Open Unless You're Down to Clown]
You know damn well every time you see a CW, you're like Show more
I WONDER WHAT IS INSIDE THIS FORBIDDEN MESSAGE.
@tahajin haahahahahaha holy fuck this was good
@tahajin i almost snarfed my drink
@tahajin ...I am completely baffled. What chain of logic leads to that? Are CWs unfair competition by people who use them as an integral part of their jokes or something?
I get to post so much here that I wouldn't dare over there and follow people I wouldn't over there because I don't have to worry about accidental porn if I browse at work
@tahajin content warnings are like the red button you have to presss
@tahajin also I object to the concept of "deserved views"
My eyeballs don't deserve shit :P
@tahajin That doesn't even make sense. Most of the stuff I post under CWs isn't stuff I'd post without elsewhere, it's stuff I'd not post unless I could CW it.
@tahajin CWs do serve the really important purpose of helping prevent massive flaming arguments breaking out like on Twitter, because instead of inflammatory or political or upsetting or the like just immediately showing up on your TL, you are prewarned and have to actively click it.
This adds just a little crucial bit of extra friction that helps keep things from going supercritical
Or maybe it's just that everyone here is a kinky furry trans lesbian Communist, and arguments don't explode because everyone just already agrees with each other, and if Mastodon ever takes off in a real way it's just gonna turn into Twitter again. I kinda hope that's not the case.
