Mastodon doesn't punish you for living your life.

It doesn't actively take metrics of your interactions to gauge your social or cultural capital.

Never will it demand that you post this much to be or stay relevant to the community, disappearing into the void if you don't meet The Quota.

So please, for the love of toot, take breaks whenever you feel you need to! We'll be here when you get back! :patcat:

@tahajin that's good advice. It's like the neighborhood coffee shop with that funny looking cat and the reading room on the side with a fireplace. No worries.

@tahajin Glad to be away from all that shit, "influencers" etc...

@tahajin I'm gonna have to disagree. Due to the linearity of the timeline you better be constantly tooting if you want any kind of clout. Also, if you want to raise awareness of something, you HAVE to keep boosting.

Not saying the linear timeline is a bad thing, or that the algorithmic versions are any better.

@Draconicrose @tahajin Your assumption that people want "clout" over just chatting one to one. Clout and influence are Twitter concepts. Here, when someone follows you it means more (in my opinion) so when you do say something, people listen

@triptych @Draconicrose @tahajin I had an interlude after taking an offline break where nobody interacted with my posts for days. The fact that my follow list is small and close made wondering if friends were ignoring me even more upsetting. Finally figured out it was because I was going online at times of day when they were busy, so the chronological timeline ate my stuff. I definitely feel it's more likely friends will miss my posts here than on birdsite, all it takes is high activity.

@Entropy_in_Drag @Draconicrose @tahajin Yeah this ecosystem is definitely evolving, and we are all learning how best to use it. But since it's open source - perhaps someone will add a feature like "while you were gone" or "latest from your friends"

@triptych @Draconicrose @tahajin yeah, that's why I've been spreading it around. Hard to improve without knowing the glitches

@triptych When you're trying to make money online you need your stuff to be seen. Maybe once we don't need money to pay for food and stuff it'll be nice not to worry about that.

@Draconicrose Yes, it's all about getting the word out to ppl when you are trying to make money. But I would say that is still too green in the gills to be an effective channel for getting clients/customers. Perhaps there will be some federated based system that evolves from Mastodon that might lead to more sales.

@triptych Agreed. This is why algorithmic timelines aren't inherently bad, by the way. It all comes down to the usage you want/need to make of it.

of course this wouldn't even be a thing if people didn't have to struggle so hard to make money, but that's an entirely new can of worms.

@tahajin but it could. I could set that right up now. Mastodon isn’t change, its users are.

@tahajin that's what I'm kind of doing atm. I mean I still check in but not nearly as much as before.

You know, I'm still blown away that this was spread as far and wide as it was, but I stand by it 100%.

As someone who found themselves on a constant IV drip of social media and actively reaped all the repercussions of it, disengaging is healthy and worthwhile.
