the good news: my arduino yun is runing and thinks it's a wifi extender (wlan0 in master mode, bridged to eth1)
the bad news: at no point while making this happen have I had to find out what the ART partition is for, so perhaps I am doing it All Wrong

In further good news it looks like I don't have to worry about the ART partition as long as I don't do something stupid like overwrite it: the kernel driver reads what it needs out of it directly so all I have to do is (1) make sure I'm running with the right machtype, (2) leave well alone
