i am switching to @tertu as that aligns more with my beliefs on how mastodon should be used

If you have a problem with another user, please report them and explain the problem instead of encouraging other users to dogpile them. This isn't Tumblr or Twitter; there are actual moderators here who will try to handle disputes.

Content Warnings are not for "offensive content" (although offensive content should be under a CW)

they are for people to consent to the consent to reading/interacting with more Serious or Harmful topics

it's not self-censorship. it's providing the subject matter to folks before they engage with the content so they can choose to interact or disengage based on their well-being and other things

Which is why taking the headphone jack out of devices is criminal. Capitalism reached a failure point when people could buy an affordable sound system and listen to it for decades without spending another dime, so it got hard at work on one hand playing up audiophile BS (you gotta buy this $1000 cord!!!) and on the other breaking compatibility with older perfectly good equipment (oops no headphone jack! Just use this dongle or bluetooth! Oh sorry you dont own your music, listen to this ad!).

subtweet re that npm thing

i can't believe "handing a package to a rando" was best practices

Best things I've read on today's npm brouhaha:

- medium.com/@jsoverson/exploiti
- gist.github.com/dominictarr/9f

I can't count the number of times I've handed over control of an npm package I owned to some random person on the internet. It used to be considered a best practice, a solution to OSS maintainer burnout. Ah well.

why exactly are blockchains always called “the blockchain”

the nice thing about mastodon is when i come back to it pretty much everything is in the same place

Not everyone can self host software systems.

Not everyone wants to self host software systems.

Not everyone gives a shit about tech

Most people just want to go online, do their thing and move on with their day

If there is a mass exodus from GitHub / GitLab or others we people hosting our own infra need to be good about discovery, community building, community engagement and more.

We also need to figure out how to federate authn/authz. I'll skip over submitting small things if it means yet another account on yet another server run by yet another random.

Centralization isn't great but it does facilitate discovery, community and engagement.

We need to keep this at the back of our mind.

okay i’ve seen people saying “oh risc-v is going to fix this” no speculative execution is something Almost Every Processor made since 1990 does. i don’t know enough about how Specter works but depending on how it does there are probably computers built in the 60s and 70s that are vulnerable to it

Hey America peeps! Sign up on healthcare.gov there's only a few days left! If you got low income you could get a credit that reduces your monthly premium significantly!

It's really weird looking at the old stereo system my family had back in the 80's, with the speaker hookups that were just bare wires we had to jam into holes, and also they didn't even have always on microphones with permanent connections back to entirely unaccountable multinational corporations who don't pay their fucking taxes. Primitive AF.

so how practical is it to run my own mail server

i think “natural scrolling” is “natural” for a touchscreen but not for a mouse

so i read some random place about how you can supposedly do much faster and simpler debouncing with NO+NC switches but i don’t know how it would work and the person who posted it made up some terminology that isn’t very helpful
