Ok but one last thought - the social threads being strong? That's what will make this stick. People will totally hang out in a gross bar with a bad sound system and horrible drinks and they will complain about it endlessly but if their *friends* are there, it will launch a generation of artists. And nobody ever really asked for an empty clean well-lit space... we build our networks on each other, not on technology (although sure, good infrastructure helps). I'm psyched to see the energy here.

And now I'll STFU and go to bed, and stop doing that thing where you recursively discuss the technology you're using with the technology itself because goddamn that's boring. It's fun though. But in the morning I'll try and start generating new stuff for a new world.
I adore the federation thing, for technical and political reasons yes but also just social - it's super nice to see messy cultures doing their thing in proximity to each other, flavors and languages and crosstalk and none of the achingly sterile liminal codes of commercial social commons.
Mastadon is clunky and slow and things aren't updating and I love it. This is really the most fun I've had on social software since pownce or early SL. ^.^
The result of me fighting forever with Python just to liberate my old wallpaper out of my ios device. I finally gave up :P

Piece of advice from someone experienced with federated social networks:
*Every instance will have it's own rules and communities. Check that first to see if it's for you and respect those rules.
*Not every instance connects with all of them. Check that too.
*Some instances will have technical limits, mostly because they're run voluntarily or made for small groups. If you can, support the admins.
*You can find information about the above on home/sign up/faq pages. Read first.
