eg "Maße" and "Masse" are actual opposites ("measurements"/"measured quantities" vs "mass"/"large amount")

@puppy the difference is in pronunciation, the "a" in Maße is a long vowel while the one in Masse is short

this is actually a specific rule after the 2002 spelling reform - in many cases ß was removed to make the language "more consistent" but after long vowels, ß remains to avoid ambiguity

@puppy so even though "gross" is not a word in German, "groß" (large) remains spelled with an ß

@puppy etymology wise, ß used to be "sz" (and one of the names used for the letter actually is "Eszett") but because that actual combination is totally out of date, "ss" has become the usual substitute in modern German spelling

@puppy the character is a ligature of the "long s" (which exists in English as well I think?) and the dated glyph for z which looks a bit like a 3 shifted down
