@thomasfuchs Using acids isn't a good advice to clean the battery compartment, because the contacts (iron) can corrode by the acid. Agressive household cleaners do a better job.


If you deep-discharge alkaline batteries with 10 to 14 in series to get most of the energy out of them, most of them will leak or "explode" at a certain point.


it is best to use rechargeable Ni-MH batteries with low self discharge. Those can also easily be charged with a solar panel. You just need a diode to prevent current from flowing from the battery back in the solar panel at night.
