Mastodon is making me almost as excited about the internet as the widespread adoption of RSS did c. 2003. That is to say: a lot.

I honestly thought I was too jaded to get truly excited about anything on the internet ever again.

@lilacwoods Well for example. I post personally to mastodon.social, but my bots are running on botsin.space. I had a moment this morning where I realized that I know the actual human being who runs the server that my bots post to. I have never, ever had that kind of experience making bots. It's almost always adversarial on some level: my bots are there as long as I'm in the good graces of a huge corporation.

@tinysubversions I'm thinking what's exciting me is the non-globality. You don't instantly get a line between every single user. What you do connect with quickly is manageable, and there's more to discover if you want to.

Dare I say it's like…the pre-commercial web?

@tinysubversions I had exactly the same feeling yesterday when @iceboxbreakfast posted its first toot, like actual giddiness and elation at making a bot for the first time in what seems like foreverrrr

@tinysubversions Mastodon is certainly giving me that particular "new technology" feel (should that be a new candle scent)?

@tinysubversions I feel very much the same. This place feels new, exciting, and different (which is odd, given how empirically familiar it is!).

@tinysubversions Hopefully it doesn't end up the way RSS did with all the interfaces that made it usable dying off or getting removed from feature lists.

@tinysubversions but Mastodon uses Atom, not RSS! :p

@tinysubversions I had a nice solid dose of this feeling back when Paul spun up tilde.club but I'll be honest: I really appreciate how much less of the work I need to do in this case for stuff to keep happening
