Dear Spotify: don’t manipulate our emotions for profit

Take a stand against Spotify
's recent speech-recognition patent that claims to detect “emotional state, gender, age, or accent” to recommend music.

Music services shouldn't be using covert surveillance in their products.

@torproject That's exactly why I removed it in the first place. But sadly after a month or two But I got it back yesterday 😓 I need to find an alternative that is privacy in mind 🔒 and FOSS :opensource:

@gmate8 So fair what I know Is FunkWhale, Audius, Nuclear I am still a but skeptical about Audius. Funkwhale is a self hosting platform but has a few limitations to it when it comes to music so does Audius But Nuclear is not a streaming service Its more like a client that try's to be a music player while making you more secure and private. I'll try to get more info but so fair that's all I got at the moment 😅

@0PT41N @gmate8 #bandcamp is great and also a better model for the music producers. You buy the music and get streaming and #DRM free music downloads.
And the producers get a real (big) part of your money.

@0PT41N @gmate8 lol wtf why does nuclear have this really negative quotes on their home pages?

@rugk @0PT41N it's a good question lmao
But it is great to have this when Spotify is down nor you want to listen Bandcamp music

@torproject That's why I quit the service a year ago.
My alternative is being more mindful with music and download from YouTube. (of course only free music)

@miku86 @torproject Some times the quality of the Music off of YT isn't that great 😕
Most of my music is off of it as well and I quit Spotify for about 2 months... until yesterday 😑
some people were saying that Funkwhale or any p2p foss services. What I have been using In the past was Bandcamp and Nuclear.

@torproject why shouldnt Spotify be allowed if netflix and potentially others are

@KitKat @torproject and my argument is that when you expose one company for a bad practice, you won't have to simultaneously expose everyone else to.

@torproject honestly I use Apple Music... I don't have any Apple products anymore. (I really don't like Apple Products) I absolutely love Apple Music. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@torproject That's a scary feature for something that's just for playing music.

@torproject Don't forget the overt surveillance implicit in contacting some remote web server every time you want to play some music.

@torproject
"manipulate our emotions"
That's what the a-social network sites call 'engagement' and is what they all do.
And ofc it's for profit.

I see no reason to single out Spotify.

@lordvalor
I have no idea as I don't use or see a need to use a streaming service (assuming that deezer is one too).

Local music FTW!

@FreePietje Yes, I think the same about local music, only that unfortunately I don't have much storage capacity to have music, but I think we will certainly have to start looking for a way to host it locally.

@lordvalor
If it works for you, you should just use it and don't worry about it.
My wishes/requirements can/are different then they are for others. And that's fine.

@FreePietje It is very true, but I am also a promoter of the concept of self-hosting, and I have always seen that having a local is much more feasible and safe. In the case of Music, I hadn't put in much effort, until now. With the Annual Spending by Deezer you can certainly buy more storage.

@torproject The solution is very simple: don't use Spotify. No listener is forced to used Spotify. It's simply not necessary and never was. Asking them to change is probably pointless. They don't care, won't care, and will continue to get more awful.
