This is the first time we have heard about financial persecution for defending internet freedom in the Tor community. We're very concerned about PayPal's lack of transparency, and we urge them to reinstate this user’s account.

Disappointed, but not surprised unfortunately. Paypal is terrible, and way too much relies on it. Hopefully they're able to get some sort of recourse.

This is a prime example of why those the claim to support freedom should stand against cancel culture even when they disagree with those being cancelled. You never know when you will become the target.

Alternatively he could just use #Bitcoin and not be subject to the whims of PayPal's financial censorship.

@lizard @torproject
Bitcoin definitely fixes this. No one can stop your payments. No one can reverse your payments. If done right no one even knows you’ve made a payment.

@lizard @torproject Until your identity is linked to your BTC address, then it's over. Bitcoin is not censorship proof.

@nosat @torproject

Seems you don't understand how #Bitcoin works.

Are you suggesting that all of the miners in the world would not add payments to Tor donation addresses to a block? Wrong! If there is a transaction fee attached, donations to Tor will get added to a block.

Bitcoin works because all parties act in their own self interest. In the case of miners they are interested in maximizing their income.

@lizard @torproject Yes the TX itself cannot be censored until the majority of miners are forced into compliance.

But a powerful adversary can monitor the address and harass, intimidate, or physically harm those involved in the transactions.

Don't underestimate the blue hair communist death cult.
