Many new users also write an introductory post, describing themselves and what their interests are. This helps other users find you.

There are two main ways to find people to follow:
1) skim through the local feed and see if anyone is posting stuff that's interesting to you (you can also do the same with the federated feed, but this can be overwhelming to start off with)
2) search for hashtags that are interesting to you and see who's posting about them
