Hey new mastodon.social users! A few suggestions for better homes: Show more

@PierreM

- tabletop.social is for tabletop games
- dice.camp is also for tabletop games, but a little bigger
- wandering.shop is geared toward fantasy and a bit of sci-fi

@trwnh isn’t Elek private? Might hard for new users to get into.

@frankspin Elekk is open to invites, as are cybre and ACP. I can pass on some invite requests, though! I know people at all those instances.

@trwnh would definitely be into that! Ive been interested in checking out Elekk as a gaming replacement for twitter/reddit/era

@trwnh how have you liked ACP? I’m trying to be on multiple instances in a way similar to using lists on twitter. Keeps a better focus on conversation topics.

@frankspin it's rad, but also it's rad. lots of cool comrades there, but a tendency for more political discussion obviously.

@trwnh that discourse is fine. Its something I need to be more tapped into. Recently signed up for DSA so trying to explore and expand.

@frankspin @trwnh
Elekk is open (currently), but anticapitalist.party is currently closed (it opens periodically).

@gcupc @frankspin FWIW I know the admin of Elekk and I have an account on ACP, so that's not too much of an issue.

@trwnh @gcupc weird on Elek I still see invite only. What’s the best way to go about invites? Just a dm?

@frankspin
@trwnh
Ah, maybe I was remembering from previously. Any elekk user can give out invites, I think.

@frankspin @trwnh Elekk isn't private, we just have registrations invite-only for the moment because we were getting a lot of spammers. :)

@trwnh .art doesn't have open regs, you have to get invited

@Gargron yeah, some of the suggestions i made are invite-based, but i made those suggestions anyway because invites can be obtained and i know people at most of those instances / i am one of those people

@ash Hmm, I could have sworn there was one founded by a journalism co-op at some point. Not sure what happened to it. writing.exchange might be the closest at the moment!

@cosullivan This shorthand list was made for people who don't have the spoons to go through the instance picker. :) It includes a few instances that I know to be good, and to which access I can procure for new users if need be!

@trwnh As an added bonus, 2/8 of these instances are open to registrations!

...and I wonder why I can't get friends and family to join. They intermittently can't join their interest groups and give up after 10 minutes of trying to figure it out.

Irritation aside, Mastodon is still better than anything else.

@trwnh Sorry, that was 3/8 instances. Oops! Don't be sad, 3/8 ain't bad. 😬

@trevdev They're open to invites, which is mostly an anti-spam measure for some instances. I know, it can be hard to get invites, but there are email links on the signup page, and FWIW I only suggested those because those were the ones I could facilitate invites for!

@trwnh I totally get it and support it. It's just the state of play that bothers me mostly. People don't have any patience, most of my people aren't really interested more social media and everyone's on the "easy" option (mostly facebook) as "everyone is there".

I just can't see a way to balance growth and quality.

@trevdev Hopefully one day, the open social web becomes bigger than Facebook. We're already 1/1000th of the way there!

@trevdev Well, more word of mouth and direct conversions is probably better in the long run. Drifting in and then drifting out due to a lack of community? Less likely to happen when you've got a liaison. It's like going to a party with one friend, rather than going to a party where you know no one.

@trwnh This is one aspect of Mastodon I haven’t fully wrapped my head around yet. If I’m a fan of one or more of those things, what difference does it make which instance I’m on? Can I still follow related hashtags and people who use them?

@chartier Sure! Joining a specific instance can mean joining a specific community. If you want your local and federated timelines to be "flavored", so to speak, you can join those servers to cut out the "noise" of other/unrelated things. Your network includes your neighbors, who they follow, and everyone they talk to.

You can stay on a big instance, but your timelines will also be more crowded and less specific. You might find some hashtag usage by people who haven't been followed, though.

@trwnh so are we to create separate profiles on these topic focused communities? Or is there a way for me to view a feed without following a member?

@willimac It's up to you, really. Some people like making multiple accounts, but the best thing to do is find a good home and stick with it. There are some requests for being able to view local timelines in the webapp, but right now it's up to each app to implement that.

On web, you can go to unmung.com/mastoview and type in an instance URL to preview its local or federated timeline.

@trwnh where is the love for blocked instances ;.;

@trwnh The instance I'm on (soc.ialis.me) is open to registrations, while I see it has been mentioned many times that ACP isn't.
Seems to be about the same sizes too.

@b9AcE Also an option! I included ACP because I can invite people to it and also because ialis is running the slightly-outdated 2.4.0rc3, while ACP is running 2.4.3.

@trwnh Not for long, I'd guess soc.ialis.me/@tech/10057071543 :-D
Anyway, Just wanted to make sure it was known.
Such lists are a very good idea!

@trwnh here's my pitch

"are you deadinsi.de? yeah, thought so"
