Neil Gorsuch, folks:
"The federal government promised the Creek a reservation in perpetuity. Over time, Congress has diminished that reservation... [b]ut Congress has never withdrawn the promised reservation. As a result, many of the arguments before us today follow a sadly familiar pattern. Yes, promises were made, but the price of keeping them has become too great, so now we should just cast a blind eye. We reject that thinking."
@hypomodern Holy cats. The Trump taxes thing is getting all the ink at the moment, but Gorsuch’s decision in McGirt is an absolute live grenade.
@typingmonkey I think the Trump taxes thing is a trap--means less than it looks like it means--anyways :).
McGirt, here, OTOH, means a huge swath of Oklahoma (like: big chunks of Tulsa, for instance) is still technically a reservation!
@hypomodern Yeah, the taxes thing is just a shiny bauble for click-chasers to bat around until the next shiny thing comes along. But McGirt is a sprawling, many tentacled monster that could have enormous, lasting impact and potentially open up a whole new front on the culture wars.
