I'd like to interject for a moment and mention that it is in fact Free Software, not just Open Source. This means you have the right not only to "view source" but also to build upon and the obligation to redistribute these modifications to the community so we together build the commons that makes the world stay afloat.

@mmn yes but by comparison technically Twitter is also free as in beer. I'm specifically thankful for the open-source aspect: that I can look at the code and see what's going on behind the scenes is something I value greatly even for products that I can't change. You are right though it is not just being open source that is important.

@mmn I was contemplating saying I'm thankful for the agpl license for enforcing the social contract that makes this all work, but I figured that would be redundant.

For me I find it useful to focus on the people that act on these processes: the commons doesn't build itself. I see it as kind of implementation detail. It definitely matters, but I'm more thankful for the results.

Maybe: different way to frame it is I'm thankful a group of people are using the model? Hmm

Or "the community informally known as 'mastodon'".

Now I'm wondering if my use of product names as representing groups is a subtle form Hofstadter pluralizing on language. Entitativity is everywhere~!
