MastoFAQs: What are MastoFAQs? Show more

To help everyone learn about the #fediverse & ease the onboarding process I'm creating this public thread.

I'll be replying to it with cultural tropes & norms I find in my journey.

We can use hashtags #MastoFAQs and #fediverseFAQs to coordinate this process.

If you want to start your own, simply copy this to your timeline, including the Content Warning, and make sure it has the hashtags in the 'body'.

Tip: change 'Content Warning' when you add a new entry.

MastoFAQs: Why the :white_check_mark:? Show more

Why do people have that green looking check mark in their username? :white_check_mark:

When many of us joined, they didn't realize this was a federated network and that you could have accounts on different nodes. It got confusing quickly.

#feditip: Until we've got a better system, adding white_check_mark emoji to your name is a convention to tell others which account is primary.

@ultimape not sure this is 100% accurate. It does make some sense but I learned about the check mark as a joke and I use it as a joke about the federated nature of mastodon and the fact that there is no verification like the birdcage

Ah yeah, there's definitely more than one version of this meme going around. Fun part about social places is that it can still be useful for a subset of users even if it's not as widely spread.

I think I saw this one evolve in real-time the other day and since it's in use like that I thought i'd note it down.
