The other toot-privacy concern I have is that private posts don't federate at all at the moment. That's a major feature of Mastodon, but if you don't live on the same instance as all of your friends, they won't see any of your private toots. That breaks the seamless feel of federation, and makes being on one instance vs. another more of a necessity (outside of instance blacklisting). From a perspective outside of mastodon.social, the privacy functionality feels more like a hastily sewn-on patch.
I know for a fact that the person behind mastodon stayed up till 3AM working on the tooling. That is a real person losing real sleep over something I'm using and asking others to use.
It can make criticism feel incredibly personal.
