#ShitHNSays when someone is talking about bitcoin and how it was going to change the world because N reasons and the reply is about 'u already had that, use paypal' xD xD.
@cwebber @vascorsd I think the biggest problem with currency systems is finding one that isn't a d-bag magnet. Seems whenever something might allow folks to make or send money with little effort it grabs the same folks that would otherwise be selling bejeweled iPhone cases in their Cell Phone repair store next to their sibling's vape store.
@craigmaloney @cwebber @vascorsd
It's almost like money attracts assholes
@pasqui023 @craigmaloney @cwebber I'm so shocked at that affirmation... how could you say something so offensive like that... money.... attracts assholes? how dare you, how could you come to that conclusion.... 😲 😲 😲 😱
(obviously sarcastic and joking)
@vascorsd @craigmaloney @cwebber
It's sad that for a moment I thought you were serious
@craigmaloney what about gnu taler https://gnutaler.org/
@alienghic I think this link pretty well sums up GNU Taller:
@craigmaloney I was wondering why we couldn't at least set up US & EU taler instance for moving donations around.
@alienghic I kind of like the concept of a FLOSS currency but it seems the adoption rate isn't quite there yet. Maybe that would be the way to get something moving, but then what happens when someone wants to convert that into conventional currency?
@craigmaloney Taler is more a like an alternative to the credit card processing network than it's like bitcoin. People buy coins from an exchange, and merchants turn coins into the exchange for native currency.
@cwebber the solution is totally not paypal or any centralized system like that. We got really close to 'the future' with bitcoin some years ago, but currently with what bitcoin has become it became too far away from its initial purposes. Some people are trying to make it be just another settlement layer and it's with those people that the concept and meme of 'you had that already, it's paypal, just use it' was born. And I think it's completly ridiculous.
@vascorsd Hm... Bitcoin has problems but I'm not happy with PayPal as a solution. They're well known to arbitrarily shut down accounts and freeze up money, not even returning it.
I sure hope we're not thinking that a centralized monopoly on payment systems is the answer :(
