“Demanding privacy from surveillance capitalists,” says Zuboff, “or lobbying for an end to commercial surveillance on the internet is like asking old Henry Ford to make each Model T by hand. It’s like asking a giraffe to shorten its neck, or a cow to give up chewing. These demands are existential threats that violate the basic mechanisms of the entity’s survival.”

Merry Christmas fediverse.

The only hardware maker trying to be ethical that I know of is Fairphone :(

However, if you're able to, buying a used computer and/or fixing your current computer is the most ethical choice.

@switchingsocial I am personally on the lookout for ethical electronics, and was wondering if there are any ethical computers out there as well as the Fairphone listed on switching.social. My research hasn't given me any results for an ethical laptop, but the desktop side seems to be a little better. AMD doesn't seem to be too bad, but parts like the motherboard are hard to find ethical alternatives for. Any chance you know of resources for finding ethical computer hardware?

I refuse to have a Google hub/Alexa in my home. I don't need spyware to turn on my lights.

@ChrisWere I used to donate to you on LiberaPay, but after they had som issues, it seems like you need to update your account. Would you mind opening it up again as an alternative to Patreon?

We're so thrilled to see how many organizations are participating in #IDAD International Day Against #DRM! See our ever-growing list here: https://u.fsf.org/2of ...and see our list of ideas for taking action today!

all going great, Spotify hasn't been open throughout and my music source has been my collection of FLACs i found on the internet. Living without DRM for me not an issue, but I can see where people are struggling. There really are no DRM-free streaming alternatives for Netflix and Spotify. And although Deezer has a laughable DRM, it's still there and counts as one.

This is a genuinely good Wikipedia article about how us left-handed people are discriminated in our daily lives... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bias_aga

Bad news for the European branches of the decentralized web. Not only did and the pass EU Parliament, the Commission introduced new anti-terrorist proposals that would need you to be available 24/7 to police your network for "terrorist content".

It's time to make your voice heard in Brussels. Start with subscribing and following edri.org/ -- the reps for digital rights groups in the EU.

Hello EU citizens! 🇪🇺

There is one more vote on #Article13 in the European Parliament on Wednesday 12th September.

Please call/mail your MEPs and tell them to reject Article 13, as it would mean content filters on the whole internet.

Phone calls work best. If you can't phone, write an email *in your own words*.

Your region may have more than one MEP, contact several if appropriate.

Mastodon instance differences: i actually use the Local timeline here; the one on .social moves too fast to be readable, so I feel like I discover fewer people to follow there.

Which means that new users are migrating to .social and going "how do I know who to follow?"

Perhaps the "find a server" list should be optimized to promote servers running about 5-10 messages/min in Local? 🤷 #ideas

lol, amp. i noticed that a page would suddenly appear after 8 seconds of waiting if i disabled js, which seemed pretty weird.

turns out that there's a css3 anim to hide the page for 8 full seconds (that is skipped when the js loads ofc).

this is *required* by the amp standard. your page fails validation if you don't do this.

sure makes these goog results look kinda suspicious, huh

A number of people including @trianderror and @pertho have asked about #alternatives to the fitness service #Strava.

By their very nature, GPS tracking services will know where you are and where you've been, so the data they record can be particularly sensitive.

Does anyone know of any open source GPS fitness tracking apps/sites?
