In last 12 years, mining process checked and rejected "4 billion billion billion" ugly hashes, and chose 632874 good looking hashes to protect the ledger.

Currently bitcoin mining checks "100 billion billion" hashes *** per second ***. In other words it checks 100 billion hashes in a billionth of a second (1 nanosecond).
