It gets easier. Kind of a fire hose at first if you stay on the Federated timeline. Hashtags are the best way to find and share stuff in any topic. I love the “Explore” trending posts timeline.

Is the Federated timeline the same as the "Live feeds" option in the right-side panel?
I cannot seem to find this Federated timeline otherwise...

Um. So there is your feed, local feed, and federation feed. I am on the ice cube app, which has a drop-down at the top middle of the feed page that lets you choose.
If no-one has suggested it to you yet, you might want to follow @FediTips who are great at answering questions about how this stuff works.
Also, perhaps @FediFollows as they suggest interesting accounts to follow (no algorithms here, so you need to curate your own feed)
Final suggestion would be to use hashtags. You can follow specific tags to bump up your local feed.

Oh, and be nice - if you post stuff that you think might trigger people or which might be a tad lewd, hit the CW button. People do appreciate it.

To be honest, the kindness I have experienced so far on this platform is kind of overwhelming. It's like moving from a tough metropolis like New York to a friendly rural village. Or like coming home and your spouse has redecorated the interior without telling you, where you have to check your front door if you didn't accidentally step into the wrong house.

Erm... short answer? Most people here seem to actually care about other people, rather than just thinking of them as "another follower is good". My own opinions, entirely, and others may differ!
