So how can I, in the future, prevent “ubuntu-desktop” from being uninstalled? It seems like that shouldn’t get removed automatically while uninstalling other (entirely userland) software.

Ummmmmmm… so Ubuntu just spontaneously decided that it doesn’t have a gui anymore???? Like, on the third boot ever??????? I swear, every single time I try a graphical Linux it breaks on me.

To its credit, even in a half-broken system, with a raw tty and an elaborate config file, emacs still launches happily.

So, I feel like the ‘ubuntu-gnome-desktop’ package should probably be installed by default, right?

And if it’s not installed that might be my problem?

Like clockwork, someone just came at me suggesting I try gentoo and, I shit you not, I burst out laugh-crying.
