Pinned toot

That magical feeling of discovering something new on the internet. I'm excited!

@nolan Thing is, the web isn't evil per se. Getting your very own 'printing press'—setting up a website, even having it communicate with other sites—has never been more affordable. But how do you get your message across when mainstream media and the public at large are pretty much blind for anything beside a few big-name publications? (I'm talking more than just YouTube, by the way.) Why do we restrict ourselves to a handful of closed platforms?

The love of liberty and the sense of human dignity are the basic elements of the anarchist creed.

What we need are more members of the safety patrol to block shit in the name of protecting folks. Fuck off, I can make up my own mind and engage in my own battles. I am my protector. Thanks for offering but you can come back and do something useful now. Like supporting your local hacktivist fighting for your right to online privacy.

In prison when ever we organize on our on to stop the violence, we get stopped by the prisoncrats. The streets is not much different. The police and city officials will attempt to shut down anything not organized by or with their approval. Damn let the ppl own their communities

Every year on June 4, China's government ramps up VPN shutdowns, arrests, digital surveillance, and social media censorship.

This year is no different—and to mark the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, the controls are even tighter. eff.org/deeplinks/2019/06/30-y

Enough is Enough: **#Signal fails: There is no substitute for real-world face-to-face relationships**

"Signal is an encrypted messaging service that has been around in different forms for about 10 years. Since then, I have seen the software widely adopted by anarchist networks across Canada and the United St…"

It's interesting searching for instances or the instance that aligns with my frequency. I have a pretty autonomy/sovereignty oriented way of looking at the world. In exploring the fediverse, I've already noticed that it may be near impossible to "start from scratch" in most instances because various admins have decided what their users/membership can or cannot interact with.

A few months ago, Microsoft decided to collaborate with Google and drop its web engine in favor of Google's.

Earlier this week, Google blocked all ad blockers, and now Microsoft has de-listed UBlock Origin (a powerful ad-blocker). Without real choice, monopolies will dictate what you see and do on the Internet.

Real choice comes with Free/Open Source Software.

Happy Birthday Raul Castro!

Cuba has survived and fought against a U.S. blockade for decades, today they stand with Venezuela, now facing brutal U.S. sanctions.

Fascinating.

"Most people in the U.S. are unaware of the fact that more than a century ago armies of occupation from the U.S., Britain, France, Germany and Japan were stationed in Chinese cities. The U.S. Navy had fleets of armored ships patrolling Chinese rivers and coastal waters. These concessions were forced..."

I frickin love and I'm glad I didn't send my DNA to 23andMe or Ancestry or any of these other companies who it can only be guessed what they use that information for and who they sell it to. Eugenics has not stopped being a thing. Wish I'd read more science fiction before Facebook existed.

It's weird. As I try both and , I only receive notification of mentions/replies and boosts through Tusky even though I've made sure those notifications are on more than once.

Yes we can enjoy things and be critical of them (or recognize criticism as valid) at the same time. I enjoyed Game of Thrones but abhored it's seeming obsession with being rape-y and they did seem to glory in it gratuitously on more than one occasion.
